A Gull on the Roof - Derek Tangye

A couple leave London behind for a flower farm on the Cornwall coast.

I thought this would be a normal modern sea change book, some fun light reading, in fact it was written in 1961. It is really hard work without electricity and hot water for a long time, the trials of market gardening and becoming part of the local community. It is very wordy and descriptive which took me a few chapters to get into.

Now I am at the end, I love it, I like its wordiness, I like the unromanticised struggle, the peasant life.

There are more in the series I might take up at a later date.
