The House in South Road

Joyce Storey

I really enjoyed this biography, it was an insight into the ordinary life of an english housewife, through the wars, the depression, after war rebuilding. It showed how little freedom and autonomy women had and the growing freedom Joyce enjoyed through her life. Motherhood, marriage, housing, work, childhood, it is all covered beautifully. It is tough and can be bleak, but it is real. I loved her friendship with her childhood friend Vee. Good to see Womens liberation told firsthand.
